How to Cancel Your Gym Membership in Minnesota
Minnesota has quietly become one of the best states in the country to cancel a gym membership. The club contract statute (Minn. Stat. Sections 325G.23-325G.29) provides a 3-business-day cooling-off window with a 10-day refund deadline, and, beyond that, a unilateral right to terminate membership at any time without a termination fee: at the end of the current term for term memberships, with timing for at-will memberships set by Section 325G.24. Contracts missing the required cancellation notices forfeit even those limits.

Cancel rights after cooling-off
Minnesota gym members can cancel within 3 business days of signing, with all payments refunded within 10 days (Minn. Stat. Sections 325G.24, 325G.25). Beyond that, Minnesota law now gives members a unilateral right to terminate at any time without penalty: term memberships end at the close of the current term, and the statute sets the effective date for at-will memberships (check Minn. Stat. Section 325G.24 for the exact timing). Contracts cannot run longer than 18 months unless the member converts to a longer term after at least 6 months (Section 325G.26). The statute states the club may not impose a termination fee or any other liability for terminating.
Auto-renewal rule
Minnesota's club contract law requires every contract to display cancellation rights in 14-point boldface and to list an address, phone number, email, and website for cancellation. Cancellation is valid in person, over the phone, or by delivering or mailing written notice. If the required notices are missing from your contract, you may cancel at any time by any method.
