How to Cancel Your Gym Membership in Alabama
Alabama regulates gym contracts under its health studio statutes (Ala. Code § 8-23-1 et seq.): a 3-day cooling-off window (excluding weekends and holidays), pro-rata refunds on death or total permanent disability, relocation relief when no affiliated facility exists within 15 miles of your new home, and closure relief when the studio can't provide facilities within 5 miles. Cancel rights after cooling-off
Alabama gym members can cancel within 3 days of signing, excluding weekends and holidays (Ala. Code § 8-23-1 et seq.). After that, cancellation is allowed if: (1) the buyer dies or becomes totally and permanently disabled during the membership term, with a pro-rata refund of remaining weeks, (2) the buyer moves and no affiliated facility exists within 15 miles of the new location, (3) the studio goes out of business and fails to provide facilities within 5 miles, or moves more than 5 miles from the contracted location, or (4) the facility is not open for business on the date promised in the contract. Buyers also get a 30-day rescission window after the facility becomes fully operational if the seller misrepresented the available facilities.
Auto-renewal rule
Alabama's health studio law requires written cancellation notice delivered or mailed to the studio. There is no gym-specific auto-renewal statute, so renewal terms are governed by the contract and Alabama's Deceptive Trade Practices Act.
