How to Cancel Your Gym Membership in Maryland

Maryland's Health Club Services law (Md. Code, Com. Law Section 14-12B-01 et seq.) gives members a 3-business-day cooling-off window with a full refund of every fee, state registration and surety requirements for sellers, a required Notice of Consumer Rights in every contract, and a ban on automatic renewal clauses unless the agreement offers a renewal option the buyer must accept. If your Maryland gym renews you without your acceptance, cite Section 14-12B-06 and contact the Consumer Protection Division.

Maryland prohibits health club agreements from containing an automatic renewal clause unless the buyer must accept a renewal option, and sellers must register with the state Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division.

Cancel rights after cooling-off

Maryland gym members can cancel within 3 business days after receiving a copy of the agreement by notifying the club in writing, in person or by certified mail (return receipt requested), and the club must refund every deposit, down payment, initiation fee, and membership fee (Md. Code, Com. Law Section 14-12B-06). Contracts must also include a Notice of Consumer Rights covering disability and temporary-closure provisions, and clubs must register with the Maryland Attorney General.

Auto-renewal rule

Maryland bans automatic renewal clauses in health club agreements outright unless the contract instead offers a renewal option the member must affirmatively accept (Section 14-12B-06). Check the statute for how it applies to your renewal.
