Gym Cancellation Guide
How to Cancel Your Equinox Membership
Equinox cancellations go through your home club, either in person with a membership advisor or by written notice as described in your agreement. Expect a notice period and at least one more billing cycle. Keep every email and get every conversation in writing.
At premium clubs the retention conversation is part of the process. A written notice letter skips the pitch and starts the clock immediately.
Ways to cancel Equinox
- in person at your home club
- written notice per your agreement
Notice period and fee timing
Equinox memberships generally require advance written notice, commonly around 30 days, and initial commitment periods apply to newer memberships. Your membership agreement states the exact notice window.
Why a certified letter beats every other method
Gym cancellations fail for one reason: no proof. Front desk staff forget, forms get lost, phone reps say one thing and the billing system does another. A cancellation letter sent by USPS Certified Mail with return receipt gives you a delivery date the gym signed for. If billing continues past your notice period, that green card is the evidence your bank needs to reverse the charges.
- Check your agreement first. Find your notice period, billing date, and any early termination fee so your letter states the correct final billing date.
- Send the letter certified. Address it to your home club. Keep the receipt and tracking number.
- Watch your next two statements. One final draft inside the notice period is normal. Anything after that gets disputed with your proof of delivery attached.

Cancelling Equinox: common questions
Can I cancel Equinox over the phone or by email?
Equinox is corporate owned, and its accepted methods are: in person at your home club; written notice per your agreement. If a method is not listed in your membership agreement, assume a request through that channel will not be honored. Written requests are the only ones that produce proof.
How much notice does Equinox require?
Equinox memberships generally require advance written notice, commonly around 30 days, and initial commitment periods apply to newer memberships. Your membership agreement states the exact notice window. The agreement you signed is the final word, so pull it up before sending anything.
What should my Equinox cancellation letter include?
Your full name, the email and phone number on the account, your membership or key tag number, your home club location, a clear statement that you are cancelling, the date you expect billing to stop based on the notice period, and a request for written confirmation. Sign it, date it, and send it by USPS Certified Mail with return receipt.
Equinox kept billing me after I cancelled. What now?
Send a second letter referencing your original cancellation date and your certified mail receipt, demand a refund of the post-cancellation charges, and give them a deadline. If billing continues, dispute the charges with your card issuer or bank and attach your proof of delivery. This is exactly the situation the certified mail receipt exists for.
