FDCPA Cease & Desist

Stop Collection Calls: Look Up the Debt Collector Calling You

Unknown numbers, voicemails about a debt, calls at work. The first step is knowing exactly who is calling and whether the debt is even real. The second step is a written cease and desist letter under the FDCPA, which legally requires the collector to stop contacting you once it arrives. Find the agency below to see what they collect and how to deal with them.

How stopping the calls works

  1. Identify the collector and validate the debt. You have 30 days from first contact to demand written proof. Collection pauses until they provide it.
  2. Send a written cease and desist. The FDCPA (15 U.S.C. § 1692c(c)) requires collectors to stop contact after receiving your written request. Certified mail gives you proof of delivery.
  3. Hold them to it. After delivery, they may only confirm receipt or notify you of specific legal action. Anything else is worth up to $1,000 per violation plus attorney fees.
