Frequently asked questions

How long does a DMCA takedown take?

Most major platforms (Google, YouTube, Meta) process valid notices within 24 to 72 hours. Smaller hosting providers may take 5 to 14 business days. Incomplete notices can be ignored entirely.

Can I send a DMCA notice without a lawyer?

Yes. The DMCA process is designed for copyright owners to file directly. The six required elements are defined by statute (17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3)), and a complete, accurate notice carries full legal weight without attorney involvement.

What if the person files a counter-notice?

The platform may restore the content after 10 to 14 business days unless you file a lawsuit against the infringer in that window. Counter-notices must be filed under penalty of perjury.

Does a DMCA notice work for content posted outside the US?

The DMCA applies to US-based platforms and hosts. For content hosted in other countries, local copyright law and the hosting country's enforcement mechanisms apply. Many non-US platforms have their own takedown processes.
